How Can You Help?

GPAC needs your help - and there are so many ways that any individual can help us out! Our volunteers mean the world to us. Without them, it would be so difficult to accomplish what Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada has done in the past decade.

Love animals but can't own a pet right now?

How about coming out to our kennel and giving some of the temporary greyhounds a little lovin'? We're always looking for people to walk the greys, groom them, change their water, teach the dogs general obedience and many other tasks while they are waiting to be put into their "forever" homes. If you are looking to adopt in the future, it's a great way to get to know greyhounds and what to expect of them as pets. Check out our online Yahoo Group Calendar to see what days need volunteers.

Five Reasons to Volunteer at the
Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada Kennels

1. Take the love and affection you get from your pets at home, and multiply it by the number of greyhounds in the kennel. That's how much lovin' you'll receive when you volunteer.

2. We're just getting out of summer and if you're like me, you ate way too much junk food this summer and had too many "beverages". So why not get some exercise and walk some puppies!

3. Picture walking the dogs along the water on that long stretch of country road, with only the sounds of crickets and water splashing gently upon the rocks, all while the sun sets, yielding a pallet of red and orange colors in the sky. Geez, you're practically in a Norman Rockwell painting!!!

4. If you are so brave as to empty the wheel barrel (it's not so bad!), you will go home to your own pup's with a sense of gratefulness that you only have to pick up after one or a few pups at home!

5. When you look into those big brown eyes of each greyhound, you know that someday soon they'll have their own home, but they don't know that. They need your attention and care. The satisfaction you'll gain from volunteering, even if it's sporatic, will be truly wonderful.

So there's 5 great reasons to volunteer! Take the whole family, make a night out of it! Give some greyhounds a bit of loving'

Foster a Greyhound!

Throughout the year, there are opportunities to foster a greyhound in your own home for a length of one month. This not only prepares a greyhound for "home living" for when it does get adopted, but also gives you an opportunity to see whether a greyhound pet is a good fit for you!

Donate to the GPAC Wish List

Do you have some 2x4's or plywood hanging around your shed? Maybe some shelving units you don't need any more? How about some comforters or blankets that you don't use any more? GPAC has a large list of items that are needed in order to maintain the kennel on a regular basis and we'll take a lot of used items off your hands, but certainly don't be afraid to donate new items as well!

Don't know what to do with your Canadian Tire money?

Why not donate it to the GPAC Society so items on our Wish List can be purchased? Donations can be made at any Meet and Greet event or any other special event GPAC will be at.

Participate

Join us for our many fund raising and awareness events all over the maritimes. From Auctions to Meet & Greets, Parades to Dog Washes, there's something fun for everyone to participate in!

For Current Greyhound Owners

Pre-screening Volunteers are always needed. Become part of a team of volunteers who do the pre-screening for potential greyhound home candidates. Your knowledge as a current greyhound owner is essential when conveying information to adoptive parents, allowing them to fully understand the joys and issues of taking on a retired racer. Pre-screening workshops are available through .

The Sparkle Fund

The Sparkle Fund is a GPAC fund that sets money aside for special purposes. Most recently, money that was used from this fund went to helping Chase, a wonderful and very young greyhound who had medical complications resulting from a broken leg. Chase's treatment was a two month process of continuous x-rays and blood work to monitor his progress and several medications needed on a daily basis. His daily monetary needs averaged out to be about $15.00 dollars per day.

Become a Virtual Sponsor

Many times there are greyhounds that haven't quite found their "forever" home or are returned to our kennels. Become a Virtual Sponsor to support these pups in their temporary stay at our kennels. All donations are tax deductible and GPAC provides receipts for donations over $10.

If you would like to make a cash donation, please use the button above to access GPAC's PayPal account and click on the Send Money tab. Our Paypal email address is .

If you would prefer to make a donation in a different way please email us at for all donations from any province other than Newfoundland.
For Newfoundland donations please email Lauren Cheeseman at

Corporate Sponsorship

Corporate Sponsors are very important to an organization such as GPAC and the support from any corporation is appreciated. Take CanJet, for example - because of CanJet, our greyhounds can fly! One of the most costly expenditures is trying to get the greyhounds that GPAC receives here in Nova Scotia to the branch in Newfoundland. With the help of CanJet, we're still able to send greyhounds to their adoptive families on The Rock at a reduced rate than other airline carriers.

We have some wonderful corporate sponsors but we are always looking for more!
