About GPAC

Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada (GPAC) is a Canadian registered non-profit society located in Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada. We are a 100% volunteer-driven organization and as of January 2006, have placed over 1000 greyhounds into loving homes throughout Atlantic Canada.

From humble beginnings, Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada (GPAC) was founded in the early 1990's by Jeanette Reynolds. Initially, dogs were brought back from the United Sates a few at a time in a car. This gradually progressed to the renting of a van and volunteers traveling south to bring the dogs back to loving homes.

GPAC works with several tracks, breeders and trainers throughout New England and other parts of the USA. We are proud of our long term relationships working alongside members of the NGA and specific tracks to home their retired racers.

Dogs are transported to Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia in a greyhound hauler, with up to thirty dogs every two months. This arrangement allows us to transport the dogs in larger loads and more economically. All dogs are transported on the condition that they will be moved immediately into pre-approved homes.

Our 2 part interview and screening process allows GPAC to maintain an extremely high success rate of placing dogs into new homes the very first time ... over 97%! This cannot be compromised.

We also have an excellent support network built up through a multitude of experience with our numerous greyhound owners. We have owners within the group that have anywhere from one to seven greyhounds in their home.

The long-term goal of GPAC is to maintain an on-site kennel that would accommodate extra dogs with the surplus. This would allow the society to place dogs continually throughout most of the year as opposed to just a few times per year and would allow new owners to receive their dogs upon approval. In the future, GPAC would like to expand the kennel to be a newer building that would house 20-25 dogs instead of 12-15. GPAC would also like to create a support kennel in St. John's, NF.

Another long term goal is to have the store open for regular hours to the public, to help increase revenue for the kennel.

GPAC has a HUGE need for volunteers at the kennel and at the store, and we also have a need for donations to the kennel, including such items as large dog crates, blankets and comforters for the pups waiting to be adopted. If you are interested in volunteering for GPAC, please contact Cheryl.
