Fundraiser for a Foster Dog in Need
Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada is doing a fundraiser for a foster
dog who is currently undergoing long term medical treatment for
osteomylitis or a bone infection.
DL Dreamscape or Chase, his kennel name, came up on a load of hounds on
July 29, 2005. He was recovering from a rear broken leg that was
surgically repaired with a plate and nine pins. I was made aware by
Jeanette that he would need some special care while he recovered, light
exercise and a compassionate, watchful eye was the order of the day. Our
family did not hesitate and agreed to be his foster family.
I arrived from hound day late in the evening and noticed some drainage
coming from the incision site. I cleaned it, applied antibiotic cream and
bandaged it. The next day Chase was doing as well as to be expected being
in a new environment but by that evening I knew there was something wrong.
He was rushed to the vets where we were told that he had osteomylitis in
the pin area of the break. He was put on antibiotics, pain meds, and hydro
therapy twice a day and crate rest. This treatment lasted for seven weeks
where every day I could see some improvement and his exercise regime
increased. Upon his check up it was determined that he was ready to get
off his antibiotics and do what greyhounds do best. Enjoy their
retirement. In less than 48 hours after taking his last antibiotic, he was
once again rushed to the vets. He had spiked a serious temperature and I
could see the leg swell. The infection had not been cured. He spent the
night at the animal hospital for observation and released to me the next
day. He was now on another type of antibiotic, more pain meds, and a
referral was made to PEI Vet College.
PEI Vet College stated that they felt infection could only be cured if
they removed the pins and plate, harvested some bone from his hip to plug
the pin holes in the bone of his leg, do cultures and placed him again on
antibiotics. Jeanette felt that this was a very invasive procedure and
that we should try everything possible for him not to go through another
surgery. So with the help of a greyhound message board in the States, we
have decided to try one other treatment for this hound. It consists of
having him on an antibiotic called Baytril and a pentoxifyline to make the
antibiotic more effective. This pentoxifyline will help increase
circulation by relaxing the blood vessels and therefore get more blood and
the vital antibiotic to the bone area.. There are very few blood vessels
supplying the bone, so when you are trying to cure an infection in the
bone it takes weeks of antibiotic to get the job done.
With all of this being said, the Sparkle Fund is low and it is our
responsibility to leave some funds available for other dogs in need but we
have to raise some money so I can continue Chase’s treatment . This is a
two months process with the Baytril, Pentoxifryline, x-rays and blood work
to monitor his progress. I estimate his daily monetary needs to be
averaged out to $15.00 dollars per day and we have to keep in mind that
this treatment may not work and that he will need to get the surgery done.
I am asking for greyhound owners to sponsor this beautiful boy’s
medical treatment for one day a month for two months or whatever you can
afford at this time so this loving boy can find his forever family and get
started on his new life.
Donations can be sent to: Chase C/O GPAC, PO Box 38203,

Paw Prints for Grey't Pals
Now is your chance to honour your Greyhound(s) and help support the
Sparkle Fund. For a mere donation of $12.00 we will place a
custom print within the interior of Houndmart. Each paw-print will
include the family name as well as the name(s) of your Greyhound(s), to a
maximum of 3 Greys per print. If you have more than 3 greyhounds
(Bless you), any additional paw prints are available for a donation of
$8.00 each. Should you have space left on your print, future
adoptions will be added at no extra charge. This would make a Grey't
Christmas gift, gotcha day present, or a gift for any occasion.
For those who wish to remember their dear departed Greys through a
paw-print, we will do "In Memory" prints. Donations at your
discretion.
To order your Paw Prints for Grey't Pals please print off the order form
found in any of the GPAC monthly newsletters and complete it. The mailing address is on the form.
